Lamborghini is showing off its new range-topping Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. As the name suggests,

the latest and greatest Gallardo variant is based on

the race car used in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, the automaker's exclusive annual racing series.

So what are the differences between the race-spec Gallardo and the upcoming road-going version? Not much, according to the Italian supercar maker. The Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale will be powered by the familiar and potent mid-mounted, 5.2-liter, V-10 engine rated at 562 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. Power is routed to all four wheels via Lambo's e-gear, six-speed automatic transmission with programmable Thrust Mode -- Lamborghini's launch control system that revs the engine to 5000 rpm for optimal starts. Lamborghini estimates the Super Trofeo will only need 3.4 seconds to scoot from 0-62 mph, while top speed is limited to 199 mph.

Not only is the Super Trofeo super-fast, but it's also super-light, with a curb weight of 2954 pounds, exactly matching the Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera. That's not surprising, as both Gallardo variants employ heavy use of carbon fiber throughout the car, including door panels, a portion of the center console, and seat shells. Also constructed of carbon fiber is the engine compartment lid, which is easily removable and held in place by a quick-release system pulled from the race car.

The Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale is available in three paint colors: Grigio Telesto, Bianco Monocerus, and Rosso Mars red, which Lamborghini says is a throwback to the days when race cars were painted according the competitor's home nation. The brake calipers are also painted red, while wheels, body kit, and rear spoiler provide contrast with a matte or glossy black finish. Inside, the red and black color scheme continues on to the suede and leather trim with contrast stitching. Carbon fiber and dark chrome metal switchgear add to the cabin's super sport feel.

Available options cater to both race- and luxury-minded customers and include carbon-fiber ceramic brake discs, a roll cage, four-point safety belts, a fire extinguisher, satellite navigation, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Lamborghini is only building 150 copies of the Super Trofeo Stradale. And judging by past special-edition Gallardos such as the Bicolore, we expect this race-inspired Lamborghini to sell out fast.

Alarming financial news cast a pall over the October 2008 Paris Auto Show, but storied Italian sports car maker Lamborghini provided a feel-good respite by unveiling a stunning concept sedan. Yes, a sedan, only the third 4-door design in the company's 40-year history. Named Estoque (say "es-toe-kay") for a sword used in bull fighting, it's as sexy as any Lambo ever built. It also looks showroom-ready. Could, mind you. For several reasons, the Estoque is not yet approved, and some reports say it won't be. And even if it is, Winkelmann says that Lamborghini would need at least four years to put it on the road, which suggests a 2012 arrival at the absolute earliest. But if it does go ahead, the Estoque is projected to more than double Lamborghini sales, to around 4,000-5,000 per year. That compares with a record 2,405 deliveries in 2007, divided between slinky V10 Gallardo and burly V12 Murcielago coupes and spider convertibles. Lamborghini is in the black, and the Estoque signals that it intends to remain there, recession or not. As Winkelmann told trade weekly Automotive News Europe, "If it's a feasible dream but an economic disaster, we cannot propose it."

Enough of Bugatti Veyron editions? This time, it’s a Lambo in the news. British tuner Prindiville Prestige is offering the most expensive, special edition Lamborghini since the launch of the €1 million Reventon. Prindiville is renowned for creating one-off, custom-made cars and this completely restyled Murcielago LP-640 is one great example. The roadster has been redesigned from the ground up and the interior modifications alone were done for €330,000. These modifications include saddle-tanned leather, hand-finished aluminum accents and specially engineered aluminum air vents. The car has been upholstered in buffalo foreskins. Carbon fiber work is all the rage these days, so they did the whole outer bodywork in carbon fiber, excluding the front compartment lid. Valances, sills and louvers have been used for a shark-like appearance. Other notable upgrades include a titanium sports exhaust system, handleless doors with remote electric opening, miniature cameras in the door mirrors and a restyled engine bay cover.

The total cost for the bespoke special edition carbon fiber Lamborghini goes over $1 million. The Lamborghini Murciélago by Prindiville is daringly designed, stylishly aggressive and one of a kind.
